SIMI VALLEY BRANCH HISTORY SINCE 1987
In 1987 our branch proudly celebrated its 20th anniversary! Since then the members have continued to be very involved with many AAUW events: annual events including Children’s Theatre as well as a Walkathon to fund local scholarships, "Women in History" celebrations, special Educational Foundation projects for fundraising; periodic candidates’ forums and Brighter Horizons (a Math/Science Conference for Ventura County); and for the past three years, we have sent two girls to Tech Trek.
In 1998, we were finding it difficult finding nominees for Board positions. Our branch was on the verge of folding or merging with another branch. At a meeting, attended by state and district representatives, a committee was formed to reorganize the branch. After polling branch members, the format and focus of the branch has been changed. Office positions are share (co-presidents, etc.) and interest groups chair and plan general meetings. With more member involvement, we experience a renewed climate of friendship and support of our membership in achieving success of AAUW goals. We continue to be a five star branch (seven star this year), recognized by the state for our achievements. The Simi Valley Branch of AAUW has many reasons to be proud of our history as we look towards a successful future.
