Brighter Horizons Math, Science and Technology Conferencetook place on Saturday, March 6th, 2010 Brighter Horizons 2010 is presented by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Camarillo and Ventura County Branches. Brighter Horizons Conference nurtures students' interests in math and science related subjects to encourage them to consider careers in technological fields. Students in 5th to 9th grades are invited to choose 3 different workshops each led by a woman who is a professional working in the subject field. Workshops include hands-on activities that demonstrate tasks related to the subject and that, hopefully, spark an interest in the student. Workshop topics include Forensic Sciences, Entomology (study of insects), Astronomy, Veterinary Medicine, Chemistry and Biochemistry for example. Thirty one workshops were presented. In March 2010 we had a very successful morning with almost every seat full. Students came in from some distances but most from Ventura County. Fun activities in workshops included making a take-home robot, solving a crime, holding a walking stick (insect), touching a brain.... All the students seemed to be having a great time. Parents were involved also in learning about finding the right college, how to finance it and guiding their child into the right career. All in all it was a great morning. Join us next year and enjoy the fun too! Contact us -> aauw.brighterhorizons@gmail.com |
